Golf Course Architect
Billy Martindale (born September 10, 1938, in Jacksonville, Texas) began his career as a successful amateur and professional golfer before transitioning into golf course development and design. After playing full-time on the PGA Tour from 1964 to 1968—with multiple top-25 finishes and a best major result of T‑15 in the 1966 PGA Championship—he co-founded JanMart Enterprises with fellow pro Don January to develop and design some 23 courses, predominantly in Texas.
Their most notable project was Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas. Martindale’s design/build partnership showcased his blend of competitive playing experience and entrepreneurial drive in shaping regional golf landscapes.
Martindale is credited specifically as the original designer of the championship 18‑hole course at Bentwood Country Club in San Angelo, Texas.
