Golf Course Architect
Charles H. Redhead was an Irish‑born engineer who emigrated to New Zealand in 1924 and became the country’s first professional golf course architect.
By applying his technical background, he modernized numerous New Zealand layouts through remodeling and strategic bunkering, famously transforming Rotorua Golf Club (Arikikapakapa), Hastings, Napier, and many others into more thoughtful, strategic parkland courses. He emphasized interest for all skill levels, strategic bunker placement, and avoidance of straight fairways.
His influence was so pervasive that by the mid‑1930s few notable courses in the country remained untouched by his work. Redhead remained active in club governance—serving as president or patron at Rotorua Golf Club—and helped introduce veterans’ golf and standard scratch scoring formulas in New Zealand.
