Devereux Emmet

Golf Course Architect

Devereux Emmet (1861–1934) was a pioneering American golf course architect of the Golden Age who laid out more than 150 courses worldwide. Born and raised in Pelham, New York, and a Columbia University graduate, he leveraged his sporting life and travels in Britain to shape his design philosophy — favoring natural landforms, wide fairways, quirky mounding, blind shots, and varied bunkering rather than rigid template holes.

He served on the design committee for the National Golf Links of America and formed the firm Emmet, Emmet & Tull in 1929. Among his many works were the original front nine at Keney Park Golf Course (Hartford, 1927) and the 18‑hole layout at Country Club of Farmington (1924).
