Golf Course Architect
Earl Stone (1926–2016) was a golf course architect based in Mobile, Alabama. S.
Navy during World War II, he studied turf management and launched a career in golf course design thanks to encouragement from Dr. Gene Nutter.
His first major commission was Lake Forest in Daphne, Alabama, which led him to design numerous courses throughout the region and abroad. Stone’s works include Rock Creek in Fairhope, TimberCreek in Daphne, Rocky Bayou in Florida, Eagle Point in Birmingham, and several projects in Bahrain where his expertise in irrigation proved essential.
Stone favored designs that balanced challenge and playability, crafting courses that welcomed both low-handicap players and the everyday golfer, often incorporating features like sculpted landing zones and thoughtfully positioned tee boxes to ensure fairness across skill levels.
