Golf Course Architect
Ellis Maples (1909–1984) grew up in Pinehurst, North Carolina, where as a teenager he learned course construction and greenkeeping under his father and mentor Donald Ross. After serving as superintendent and pro-manager at clubs including Raleigh Country Club, he struck out in private practice around 1953 and became one of the Southeast’s most active architects for the next 30 years.
He was a longtime ASGCA member, served as its president, and designed or renovated more than 60–70 courses across the Carolinas and beyond, including Winston Lake Golf Course’s back nine, Country Club of Johnston County, Grandfather Golf & Country Club, and The Country Club of South Carolina. His design style favored natural routing, structuring from high point to high point, and dramatic flash-faced bunkers that framed play without over-embellishment.
