Golf Course Architect
Eugene Perry “Gene” Hamm Jr. (1923–2016) was an American professional golfer from Raleigh, North Carolina, who transitioned into a prolific golf course designer.
S. Navy, and working under notable figures such as Frank Maples and Robert Trent Jones, he launched his own design career around 1959, ultimately creating or overseeing more than 60 courses across the American Southeast and New York.
His first 9-hole design dates to 1949, and early on he collaborated on Duke University’s course in 1955 before establishing his independent practice. Hamm was inducted into the PGA Carolinas Section Hall of Fame in 2001.
He passed away December 10, 2016, at age 93.
