Golf Course Architect
Hal Purdy (1905–2002) was an American golf course architect known primarily for his mid‑20th century work on public and resort courses in the Northeastern United States. He began his career in engineering and golf club management, later becoming a construction supervisor under famed architect Robert Trent Jones starting in 1956.
Elected to the American Society of Golf Course Architects in 1973, Purdy contributed to expanding public access to well‑designed golf in the region. In 1967 he redesigned and expanded Chenango Valley State Park’s original 9‑hole Riverside course into a full 18‑hole layout.
His style reflects the influence of Trent Jones, favoring strategic routing through natural landscapes and parkland-style playability.
