Golf Course Architect
James Foulis (b. August 22, 1871, St Andrews, Scotland – d.
March 3, 1928, Chicago) was a professional golfer who emigrated to the United States in 1895 to serve as the first golf professional at the Chicago Golf Club. S.
Open and competed in early editions of the championship through 1911. Outside competitive play, Foulis applied his craftsmanship to the design and construction of golf courses across the American Midwest, laying out many 18‑hole courses starting in the mid‑1890s and contributing to early course architecture.
Notably, he designed Bonnie Brook Golf Course in Waukegan, Illinois, opening in the late 1920s. He also collaborated on equipment innovations such as the mashie‑niblick and ball surface patterns.
