Golf Course Architect
John LaFoy is an American golf course architect who began his career apprenticing under George W. Cobb in the early 1970s, working notably on bunkers, tees, and the famed thirteenth green at Augusta National Golf Club from 1973 to 1978.
After launching his own firm in the 1980s, he specialized in renovating classic layouts by Tillinghast, Ross, MacKenzie, Raynor, Macdonald, Trent Jones, Maxwell, and others, and has completed over 80 renovations and designed more than 30 new courses. His work includes courses such as Country Club of Charleston, Country Club of Birmingham (East Course), Linville Ridge, The Neuse Golf Club, and Kiskiack Golf Club (opened 1997).
He served as president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects in 1999–2000 and is recognized for his sensitivity to natural terrain and classic design restoration.
