Golf Course Architect
John Latham Volk (1901–1984) was an Austria‑born American architect whose prolific six‑decade career in Palm Beach, Florida, produced over 2,000 projects including residences, civic buildings, and commercial centers. A graduate of Columbia University who apprenticed in New York, he relocated to Palm Beach in 1925–26 and became one of the famed “Big Five” architects defining the Palm Beach aesthetic.
He adeptly designed in multiple styles—from Mediterranean Revival to Moderne, Georgian Revival, and Bermuda—demonstrating a remarkable adaptability and sensitivity to climate and proportion. Notable works include Royal Poinciana Plaza, additions to the Everglades Club and First National Bank, the Parker Playhouse, White Gables (his own home), and Casa de los Arcos.
