Golf Course Architect
Lawrence M. Hughes was a mid‑20th‑century American golf course architect who contributed significantly to the Golden Age of desert‑region golf design.
He had roots in traditional golf architecture—working under Donald Ross with his family on early projects—and later emerged as an independent designer after World War II, shaping courses across Southern California, Arizona, and Mexico. Notably, he designed De Anza Country Club in Borrego Springs, completed in 1958, along with other prominent layouts including Thunderbird Country Club, Eldorado Country Club, La Quinta Country Club, Las Posas Country Club, Marin Country Club, Santa Barbara Golf Club, and others.
