Golf Course Architect
Lloyd M. Clifton, Sr.
was a respected Florida-based golf course architect and ASGCA Fellow whose career spanned agronomy, course superintendence, and dozens of design projects. After beginning as a golf course superintendent in the late 1950s, he designed his first course—West Orange Country Club—in 1964, before founding the firm Clifton, Ezell & Clifton (later CEC Golf Design Group) with his son George and partner Ken Ezell in 1987.
Over his career, he contributed to more than 150 golf course projects, with notable work including expansive master planning for The Villages retirement community in Central Florida (developing hundreds of holes), as well as courses like Grey Oaks, Hunters Creek, Highland Creek, Debary Plantation, Plantation Bay, and Kissimmee Bay Country Club, which opened in 1990 and was designed by him. Clifton’s work reflects deep horticultural and agronomic expertise and practical architectural skill rather than flamboyant stylistic signature.
