Golf Course Architect
Paul Albanese is an American golf course architect with a career spanning over three decades. S.
in Environmental and Agricultural Engineering from Cornell University and a Master’s in Landscape Architecture from Harvard, where he tailored his studies toward golf course design and received a Penny White grant for study in Scotland. Beginning his career with Matthews & Associates in Michigan, he later formed design firms—first with Ray Hearn and then with Chris Lutzke—and today leads Albanese Golf Course Architecture & Construction Management, serving roles in both design and construction management.
He has also directed the Golf Course Architecture program at the Edinburgh College of Art and maintains membership in the American Society of Golf Course Architects. Albanese’s design philosophy emphasizes working with natural landforms, such as drumlins, and integrating rugged, earthy aesthetics into his layouts.
Sage Run Golf Club in Michigan, his design for the Island Resort & Casino, showcases his approach: a prairie links-style layout characterized by rugged native grasses, elevation changes, and the strategic use of a central drumlin that shapes routing and plays up-and-down movement.
