René Muylaert

Rene Muylaert (died May 7, 2005) was a Canadian golf course architect based in Southwestern Ontario. A humble yet influential figure, he designed nearly 50 courses across the province, specializing in modest‐budget projects that harmonized with existing landscapes and minimal earth movement.

Among his best‐known works is The Oaks Golf Club (Delaware, Ontario), which he considered his pride and joy—using natural terrain, former gravel pits, woodlots, and a dramatic island‑green par‑3 to create a memorable and affordable championship layout. Muylaert’s approach emphasized usability and economy: he often worked alone at a simple desk or even on the hood of his car, sketching layouts with pencil and graph paper.

He avoided unnecessary construction, instead letting holes evolve naturally from the terrain. His legacy includes courses like Emerald Hills, Victoria Park East and West, Granite Ridge, Mill Run, and many municipal projects, all reflecting his commitment to accessible golf that respects the land.
