Golf Course Architect
) is an American golf course architect born in 1939 in Montclair, New Jersey. After graduating from Yale in 1961 and briefly attending Stanford Law School, he joined his father’s firm and led west coast operations.
In 1972 he founded Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects, headquartered in Palo Alto, California, and has since led a practice responsible for designing or renovating over 250–300 courses in around 40–50 countries, establishing a global reputation. Jones is noted as an early and passionate advocate of environmentally sensitive design.
His firm’s “Green Proclamation” emphasizes water conservation, turf reduction, and Audubon-certified courses. He champions the philosophy of “listening to the land,” aiming to blend thoughtful design with ecology, and has earned recognition for landscaping that honors natural terrain and sustainability.
