Golf Course Architect
Rod Whitman is a Canadian golf course architect and shaper known for his hands‑on, minimalist design ethos. After studying at Sam Houston State University in the late 1970s, he worked under Pete Dye as a construction foreman before launching his solo career designing courses such as Wolf Creek in Alberta (1984), and later projects across Europe and beyond.
His connection to France comes from his work at Golf du Médoc (now Cabot Bordeaux), where he served as project manager alongside Bill Coore on the Châteaux course and then independently designed the Les Vignes course, opening in 1991. Whitman’s philosophy centers on revealing natural site attributes with subtle shaping and a ‘light touch’, preferring to shape on‑site rather than rely solely on drawings, and spending extended time in the field throughout the construction process.
