Golf Course Architect
Ron Kern is an American golf course architect based in Indiana, active since the mid‑1980s. He comes from a lineage of golf course designers—his father, Gary Kern, was a practitioner in the field—and was raised immersed in classic design philosophy.
W. Tillinghast, James Braid, and his father’s mentor, Bill Diddel.
Over the years, Ron has designed and remodeled numerous courses across Indiana and the Midwest. His work includes notable projects such as Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville and remodels at Highland Golf & Country Club and Evansville Country Club, but he may be best known for leading the comprehensive multi‑nine renovation of Old Oakland Golf Club in Indianapolis beginning in 2016, completing all 27 holes and facilitating new practice facilities.
Kern’s design philosophy emphasizes honoring the natural terrain, creating variety in shot-making, and balancing challenge with playability for golfers of all skill levels.
