Golf Course Architect
William Hickman “Bill” Diddel was an American golf course architect from Indianapolis, active predominantly in the Midwest during the Golden Age of golf. Born June 7, 1884, he transitioned to full‑time design in the early 1920s after an athletic collegiate career and work in insurance and automotive businesses.
A founding member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, he served as its president twice. He designed or remodeled hundreds of courses—reports vary from 75 to nearly 300—including work at the Country Club of Terre Haute in the mid‑1920s.
His style emphasized strategic design that embraced natural land contours, subtle challenges without excessive bunkering, and player enjoyment across skill levels. Diddel remained active into his later years and passed away February 25, 1985.
