Abbeyleix Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland club at Rathmoyle on Ballyroan Road in Abbeyleix, County Laois. The organisation dates to 1895, placing it among Ireland's earlier golf clubs, although its course history includes several moves and a period of closure. The club's own history records early golf at an area known as The Island, a later course at Ballymullen, a move to Colonel Hugo Poe's nine-hole course at Heywood in 1921, and relocation to Rathmoyle in 1927.
It returned to Ballymullen in 1932, closed in 1937, and was re-established at Rathmoyle in 1948. Abbeyleix now operates as an 18-hole course and welcomes visiting golfers. Its published 2026 visitor green fees are €25 midweek and €30 at weekends.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. The course originally opened in 1895. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Junior Membership, Putting green, Chipping area, Practice bunker, Club shop, Restaurant, Changing rooms.
Abbeyleix Golf Club traces its foundation to 1895, when a small group of residents from Abbeyleix and the surrounding district established the club. Viscount de Vesci became permanent president and local rector Rev. A.
E. Bor served as secretary and an important organiser during its first two decades. The club believes its earliest golf was played at an area known as The Island.
By the time Abbeyleix affiliated with the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1905, play had moved to a self-made course at Ballymullen.
The club's history is unusually mobile. In 1921 it moved to Heywood to use Colonel Hugo Poe's nine-hole course. Growing membership and the inconvenience of travelling there prompted another move in 1927, when Robert Wilde of Rathmoyle House allowed the club to use land at Rathmoyle.
Abbeyleix returned to Ballymullen in 1932, but declining membership during the 1930s ultimately led to closure in 1937. The interruption lasted through the Second World War. In 1948 the club was re-established at Rathmoyle, where a clubhouse was erected and membership began rebuilding.
Abbeyleix continues at Rathmoyle as an 18-hole club with visitor golf, competitions and society golf. Its modern identity therefore combines a present-day parkland course with an institutional history stretching back to the late nineteenth century.
