Origins

The idea for a course emerged in 1935 among Tokyo Golf Club members and Atami residents with local villas. Shiro Akaboshi was selected to design it, and the nine-hole course opened in May 1939.

Did You Know?
During World War II the course was requisitioned for a naval gun emplacement and three of its then 12 holes became sweet-potato fields.

Design Philosophy

Construction relied heavily on manual labour and used the steep existing landform rather than extensive mechanised earthmoving.

Development

The club briefly expanded to 12 holes in 1939, was requisitioned during the war, and was restored as nine holes under U.S. military administration after 1945. It was returned in 1952 and transferred to its present operating company in 2003.

Recognition

Atami survives as one of Japan's comparatively small number of pre-war golf courses.

Today

The nine-hole course operates alongside the Atami Club Geihinkan hotel.
