Benoni Country Club traces its golf history to 1907, when Gilbert Thompson and Bertie Winkfield, employees of Van Ryn Mines Estate Limited, began creating a course on the former Vlakfontein farm. The property had been acquired by Sir George Albu in 1894, and the early golf operation was known as the Van Ryn Club before the development of Benoni Country Club. The present course is an 18-hole parkland layout.
The club records a significant competitive history, including hosting the men's South African Amateur and South African Stroke Play championships and serving as a qualifying venue for the South African Open and Sunshine Tour events. In addition to golf, Benoni developed as a broader country club, but its early identity is closely tied to the mining-era development of the East Rand.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. The course originally opened in 1907. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors.
