About Blakes Golf Course

Blakes Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-71 course at North Weald near Epping in Essex. Architect Howard Swan designed the layout as an inland-links course, using rolling ground, undulating fairways and sleeper-faced bunkering to create links-style playing characteristics away from the coast. A regional tourism source publishes a longest setup of 6,631 yards, with additional yellow and red configurations at 6,206 and 5,783 yards.

The club constructed sand-based tees and greens and installed extensive fairway drainage, irrigation and buggy paths, infrastructure intended to support play through a wide range of weather conditions. One specifically documented feature is the par-3 eighth, where the club describes an island green. Visitors and societies are accepted seven days a week and online visitor tee times are handled through BRS Golf.

The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 71, 6,631 yards. The course was designed by Howard Swan. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Restaurant, Bar, Pro Shop, Buggy Hire, Membership.

Origins

Blakes was developed at North Weald as an inland course intended to reproduce some of the playing characteristics associated with seaside links. Golf course architect Howard Swan is credited with the design.

Did You Know?
The club specifically identifies its eighth hole as an island-green hole.

Design Philosophy

The design uses rolling fairways, changes in ground contour and sleeper-faced bunkers to create an inland interpretation of links golf. The construction also incorporated sand-based tees and greens, a grid-style fairway drainage system and extensive irrigation. The club highlights the eighth hole's island green as a distinctive element of the routing.

Development

The course has matured as an 18-hole facility and has retained its inland-links identity. Buggy paths extend around the course and the club states that buggies can operate year-round. The clubhouse supports golf as well as functions and social events.

Today

Blakes operates as an 18-hole visitor-accessible golf club at North Weald. Visitor tee times are sold through BRS Golf, while memberships, society golf and clubhouse functions form additional parts of the operation.
