About Blue Canyon Country Club - Lakes Course

Blue Canyon Country Club's Lakes Course is an 18-hole, par-72 layout in Phuket designed by Japanese architect Yoshikazu Kato. The club states that the course was created in February 1999, while its detailed course page also labels the build year as 1998; 1999 is used here as the opening year and the discrepancy is noted. The championship tees measure 7,129 yards.

Like Blue Canyon's older Canyon Course, the Lakes was developed from land shaped by former tin mining, and Kato's routing worked around existing landforms and wildlife habitat. Water is central to the layout and the club states that it affects 17 of the 18 holes. Current published tee data lists Black at 7,129 yards with a 74.0 rating and 128 slope, Blue at 6,504 yards, White at 6,073 yards and Red at 5,366 yards.

The course is an 18-hole resort golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,519m (7,129 yards), course rating 74 and slope rating 128. Designed by Yoshikazu Kato, the course originally opened in 1999. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Golf shop, Practice facilities, Dining, Restaurant, Terrace, Lodge, Apartment.

Origins

Blue Canyon's golf property was developed on an abandoned tin-mining landscape bordered by rubber plantations. Yoshikazu Kato began developing the site in the late 1980s and subsequently created two courses. The Lakes followed the older Canyon Course and was introduced in 1999.

Design Philosophy

Kato worked with the mine-scarred landforms, canyons, woodland and existing habitat. On the Lakes Course, water became the defining strategic element, affecting all but one hole. Multiple tee positions were incorporated to vary the required driving distances.

Development

The Lakes became Blue Canyon's second championship layout, complementing the Canyon Course rather than replacing or extending it.

Recognition

The closing par four was named Best Par Four in Asia by Asian Golf Monthly in 2003.

Today

The Lakes remains a 7,129-yard par-72 course with four published principal tee sets and operates alongside Blue Canyon's separate Canyon Course.
