Boyce Hill Golf Club is an 18-hole private-members club in Benfleet, Essex, with visitor access. The club began on Boyce Hill Farm in 1922. Its own detailed history credits Joe Steel with laying out the original course, whose first nine holes were formally opened on 1 October 1922.
James Braid's connection came later: Braid advised on a substantial reconstruction undertaken with Hawtree & Taylor, and the rebuilt course was officially opened in September 1925. The current championship white card measures 6,009 yards, plays to par 68 and is rated 70.2 with a slope of 130. The course is therefore relatively short by modern yardage standards but rated above par.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 68, 5,494m (6,009 yards), course rating 70.2 and slope rating 130. Designed by Joe Steel, the course originally opened in 1922. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Pro Shop, Practice Facilities.
Boyce Hill emerged from members associated with Leigh Park Golf Club. In August 1922 the new Boyce Hill Golf and Country Club company secured Boyce Hill Farm at South Benfleet. Joe Steel was asked to lay out the course, and labourers quickly established fairways and greens.
The first nine formally opened on 1 October 1922 while work continued on the second nine.
The club soon sought a more ambitious course. James Braid was brought in as an adviser and Hawtree & Taylor undertook a major reconstruction during 1925. H.
A. Barker. The reconstructed routing remained substantially intact for decades, although individual greens and bunkers changed.
Boyce Hill remains a private members' club with controlled visitor access and a modernised clubhouse. The championship card is 6,009 yards, par 68.
