Brookmeadow Country Club is an 18-hole public golf course in Canton, Massachusetts, about 15 miles southwest of Boston. Founder Frank Simoni, a New England real estate developer, opened the first nine holes in 1966 on 200 acres he had originally planned to subdivide for housing; the back nine followed in 1968, completing a par-72 layout designed by architect Sam Mitchell in partnership with Simoni. The course plays to 6,566 yards from the Blue tees (course rating 71.7, slope 132), with White (6,200 yards, rating 70.2, slope 125) and Red (5,119 yards, rating 69.5, slope 119) tees also available. Bentgrass fairways and greens run along the Neponset River, with water, waste areas, and bunkering coming into play on several holes, including the par-5 16th, considered the tightest hole on the property.
The club is still family-owned, now run by Craig MacDonald, Simoni's grandson and the third generation to lead it. Golf facilities include a public driving range, a 5,000-square-foot putting green, and The Perch, a 100,000-square-foot practice facility that opened in 2025. The clubhouse, completed in 1997, houses Gatherings at Brookmeadow, an event and wedding venue, along with a grille room and bar. Tee times are priced dynamically by demand, with published rates running roughly $56-$64 for weekday 18 holes and $75-$95 on weekends.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,004m (6,566 yards), course rating 71.7 and slope rating 132. Designed by Sam Mitchell and Frank Simoni, the course originally opened in 1966. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Function Room, Driving Range, Pro Shop, Putting Green, The Perch (Golf Performance Center), Restaurant.
Frank Simoni was a well-known New England real estate developer who, in the early 1960s, had drawn up plans to subdivide 200 acres of Canton for housing. At 47, he took up golf for the first time and later described the experience as being "bitten by the golf bug." The new hobby changed his plans for the land: rather than a subdivision, he decided to build a public golf course that would preserve the site and endure for generations.
That decision, taken around 1964, became Brookmeadow Country Club.
Before construction, Simoni studied courses across the United States and Europe, settling on a guiding principle that the layout should be "fair and playable, but still challenging." Working with architect Sam Mitchell and personally involved in much of the design and construction himself, Simoni opened the first nine holes in 1966; the back nine followed in 1968, completing the 18-hole routing that runs along the Neponset River today.
Simoni died in 1997 without completing the clubhouse he had long envisioned. His wife, Betty Simoni, who had worked alongside him in the development business, took over the project and finished it as what she called "a labor of love in his memory." In 2001, Betty and her daughter Ann MacDonald opened the clubhouse's event space, Gatherings at Brookmeadow, adding weddings and functions to the club's business.
Craig MacDonald, the third generation of the family, became General Manager in 2015 and has since overseen a multi-million-dollar restoration of the course's design features, irrigation, and infrastructure that began in 2018, followed by the 2025 opening of The Perch, a 100,000-square-foot practice facility built with input from PGA professionals and golf course architects.
Three generations after Frank Simoni broke ground, Brookmeadow remains family-run, day to day, by his descendants. The club now operates as both a daily-fee golf course and an events venue: Gatherings at Brookmeadow hosts weddings and celebrations that have been featured by The Knot and WeddingWire, alongside the golf operation Simoni founded and the practice facilities built to support it.
