Bungay & Waveney Valley Golf Club occupies Outney Common beside the River Waveney in Suffolk. The club was formed in January 1889 after six local men met to establish golf on common land. Its original nine-hole course is credited in the club's historical account to Willie Fernie.
James Braid was subsequently brought in as the course developed, and the club now identifies strongly with Braid and participates in the James Braid Association. The present course plays to par 69 and approximately 6,055 yards, with sandy, well-draining ground that supports year-round play. Its heathland character includes gorse, firs, gently changing elevation and occasional sharper ravines.
The course is an 18-hole heathland golf course. It plays to par 69, 6,055 yards. Designed by Willie Fernie, the course originally opened in 1889. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Dining.
On 8 January 1889 six local men met to discuss establishing golf at Bungay after permission was obtained to create links on Outney Common. The Waveney Valley Golf Club was formed and a nine-hole course was quickly brought into play.
The club's history credits Willie Fernie with the original nine holes and records James Braid's involvement in the course's subsequent development. The surviving layout uses the naturally free-draining common, with gorse, firs, changes in elevation and compact greens shaping play.
Golf continued through periods of disruption, including the First World War, when a temporary club maintained play around a military encampment. The club was formally revived in 1919.
Bungay & Waveney Valley remains an 18-hole heathland course on Outney Common and participates in the James Braid Association.
