About Butter Valley Golf Course

Butter Valley Golf Course is an 18-hole public course at 3243 Gehman Road in Barto, Pennsylvania. The Gehman family has occupied the land since the eighteenth century, and John and Betty Gehman began converting their dairy farm into a golf course in the late 1960s. The front nine opened on Memorial Day 1969 and the back nine followed on July 4.

The present Orange course plays 6,532 yards to par 72 and is rated 70.1 with a slope of 124. A private airstrip crosses the property because John Gehman was also a pilot; the runway was positioned before the golf holes were laid out. Origins

The Gehman family has cared for the land since 1788. John and Betty Gehman operated a dairy farm there until the economics of farming led them to consider other uses in 1967. They began shaping tees and greens themselves, and the front nine opened on Memorial Day 1969.

The back nine followed on July 4.

Did You Know?
John Gehman plotted the property's longer airstrip before laying out the golf holes.

Design Philosophy

The routing was fitted around the Gehman family's working landscape and private runway, taking advantage of the property's natural rolling ground.

Development

A substantial redesign took place in 1988, when holes were added and the course was lengthened. Later changes included rebuilding the sixth green, changing the third to a par 5 and constructing new back tees on several holes.

Today

Butter Valley remains under Gehman family management and operates as a public 18-hole course with an active airstrip integrated into the property.
