About Camaloch Golf Course

Camaloch Golf Course is an 18-hole course on Camano Island, Washington, whose development happened in two distinct stages. The Camaloch Association development began in 1967, and members later used undeveloped association land to create an original nine-hole golf course. Much of that work was performed by volunteers clearing brush, trees and rocks, and the nine opened in 1972.

In the late 1980s the membership acquired additional land for an expansion. Golf architect Bill Overdorf designed the second nine, which opened in 1991, creating the present 18-hole layout. The club says it subsequently redesigned and rebuilt the remaining original greens so that they better matched the newer nine.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. Designed by Bill Overdorf, the course originally opened in 1972. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Putting Green, Chipping Area, Practice Bunker, Pro Shop, Restaurant, Bar.

Origins

The golf course grew out of the Camaloch Association development, which began in 1967 as a residential and recreational project on Camano Island. After its 466 lots sold, association members decided in the late 1960s to turn undeveloped acreage into a nine-hole golf course. The project was unusually hands-on: members contributed substantial volunteer labour clearing the site and preparing the land.

That first nine opened in 1972.

Did You Know?
Much of Camaloch's original nine was physically built by association members volunteering to clear brush, trees and rocks.

Development

During the late 1980s the membership acquired enough additional acreage to expand Camaloch to 18 holes. Bill Overdorf designed the new second nine, which opened in 1991. The club says that subsequent improvement work included redesigning and rebuilding the remaining original greens so that their character and construction would better conform to the newer nine.

Today

Camaloch now operates as an 18-hole course on Camano Island with public play, practice facilities and clubhouse services. Its two-stage construction remains important to understanding the architecture: the original nine was a community-led project, while Overdorf is specifically credited with the 1991 expansion.
