Cardinal's story began in 1989 as a public golf destination in King, north of Toronto, serving the Greater Toronto Area.
The operation expanded significantly over the following two decades. Kettle Creek was introduced in the mid-1990s as a shorter executive course. RedCrest opened in 2009, bringing the property to four 18-hole courses.
In 2017 the organisation expanded beyond the King site through acquisitions elsewhere in Southern Ontario and formed the wider Cardinal Golf Group.
The King complex now groups Cardinal Golf Club, RedCrest Golf Club and Kettle Creek Golf Club. Cardinal Golf Club itself has two layouts, East Wing and West Wing; RedCrest is a separate full-length course; and Kettle Creek is an executive course that also supports FootGolf.
