Golf has been established on the Castlegar property since the mid-1950s. Multiple independent golf references date the course to 1955, while specialist course sources describe its original design history differently: Where2Golf credits the layout to club members, whereas GolfNow and TeeOff identify Ted Locke as an architect. With no authoritative club history located that resolves that discrepancy, the original design credit remains uncertain.
What is clear is that the course developed into an 18-hole championship layout on a plateau above the Columbia River, using the site's rolling ground and pine forest as defining features.
The routing is an inland, tree-lined parkland course over undulating terrain. Its Gold tees extend to 6,712 yards at par 72. The club describes the par-4 ninth as the most challenging hole, requiring two long shots to reach the green and precise placement on the approach.
The official scorecard also identifies out-of-bounds areas on holes 1, 2, 3, 7, 8 and 9 and overhead power-line provisions on holes 7 and 15. No sufficiently authoritative source was found to attribute specific design intentions to an individual architect.
Over its history, Castlegar developed beyond the golf course into a broader golf and accommodation facility. The present property includes a golf shop, restaurant and clubhouse as well as a 20-site RV park. Practice infrastructure includes a driving range and practice greens, and the club describes its driving range as the largest in the Kootenays.
The facility also supports lessons, rental clubs and power carts. These additions have allowed the property to function both as a local semi-private club and as a stay-and-play destination for visiting golfers.
Castlegar has developed a notable provincial championship record. The club states that it has hosted the BC Men's Amateur Championship four times. British Columbia Golf records confirm that Castlegar was involved in the 1989 championship and again hosted in 1995, while the 2010 BC Amateur was staged at Castlegar and won by Adam Svensson with a four-round total of eight-under-par 276.
The club has also hosted the BC Seniors and was scheduled to host the 2026 BC U17 Boys and Girls Championship. Outside tournament golf, the club reports a four-star Golf Digest rating and a #2 Canadian best-value ranking in Golf Advisor/GolfPass's 2019 Golfers' Choice results.
