About Chesfield Downs Golf Club

Chesfield Downs Golf Club near Hitchin in Hertfordshire has a main 18-hole course designed by British golf-course architect Jonathan Gaunt. Gaunt identifies Chesfield Downs as his first golf-course design, undertaken while he was in his mid-20s. The main layout is generally published at 6,646 yards and par 71 from the back tees and is described by the current operator as links-style, with rolling fairways and free-draining ground.

The property also has a separate nine-hole par-3 course called The Lannocks, so the two layouts should not be merged into one scorecard. Practice facilities include a 20-bay Toptracer-powered driving range, and the wider country-club operation includes coaching, a gym and spa facilities. Guest golfers are welcomed alongside members.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 71, 6,077m (6,646 yards). The course was designed by Jonathan Gaunt. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Toptracer Range, 9-Hole Par-3 Course, Golf Academy, Pro Shop, Club Hire, Gym, Spa.

Origins

Chesfield Downs is particularly significant in architect Jonathan Gaunt's career. The European Institute of Golf Course Architects records it as the first course he designed and built, with work beginning in 1988 before he established his independent architectural practice in 1990.

Did You Know?
Future Ryder Cup player Ian Poulter was associated with Chesfield Downs early in his golf career and won the club championship as a young player.

Design Philosophy

The main course was laid across Hertfordshire downland as an open, rolling layout. The current operator describes it as links-style, while Gaunt Golf Design categorises the project as parkland. Its rolling fairways and drainage are intended to keep the layout playable through much of the year.

Development

The property evolved beyond the original 18-hole course into a broader golf and country-club operation. A separate nine-hole par-3 course, The Lannocks, provides a shorter option, while the driving range now operates as the 20-bay Toptracer-equipped Strike Shack.

Today

Chesfield Downs is part of The Club Company collection. It combines the 18-hole Gaunt course with The Lannocks short course, range, coaching and health-club facilities, and accepts guest golfers as well as members.
