About Clube de Golf Santo da Serra

Clube de Golf Santo da Serra is a 27-hole golf complex above Machico on Madeira. Golf on the site dates to 1937, but the modern facility largely derives from a major Robert Trent Jones Sr project commissioned in the late 1980s. The Machico and Desertas nines opened as an 18-hole combination on 30 September 1991; the third nine, Serras, followed on 10 October 1998, completing the planned 27 holes.

Madeira's official tourism authority gives the combined course length as 9,003 metres. Machico and Desertas form the combination historically used for the Madeira Islands Open, while Serras provides a separate nine-hole alternative. The facility includes a multi-level driving range, two putting greens, chipping and bunker practice areas, equipment hire, pro shop and clubhouse restaurant.

The course is a 27-hole mountain golf course. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr, the course originally opened in 1937. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Putting Greens, Chipping Green, Practice Bunker, Pro Shop, Restaurant, Club Hire, Trolley Hire, and 2 more.

Origins

Golf at Santo da Serra dates to 1937. The early course developed into an established island club and was visited at its inauguration by prominent British golfers including J.H. Taylor, Alf Padgham, Abe Mitchell, Allan Dailey and Bill Cox.

Did You Know?
Only six holes of the original Favellas course remained within the Machico-Desertas 18-hole course that opened in 1991.

Design Philosophy

The modern course was conceived as a 27-hole project by Robert Trent Jones Sr rather than simply an extension of the old nine. Three loops — Machico, Desertas and Serras — allow different combinations. The terrain and elevation above Machico were incorporated into the routing, with the loops having distinct characteristics.

Development

A. responsibility for constructing a new 27-hole course. Machico-Desertas opened on 30 September 1991, with only six holes retained from the earlier Favellas course.

The last nine opened on 10 October 1998. A new clubhouse followed on 13 September 2000.

Recognition

The first Madeira Open was staged at Santo da Serra in January 1993. The club states that it subsequently hosted 21 editions through 2015, bringing numerous Ryder Cup and major-championship players to Madeira.

Today

Santo da Serra operates as a 27-hole facility with three nines, extensive practice facilities, equipment rental, a pro shop and clubhouse restaurant. Machico and Desertas are the championship combination associated with the Madeira Islands Open.
