Metro Toronto purchased 65 hectares of Carson Park in February 1955 and proceeded with construction of a municipal golf course beside the West Don River. The completed course officially opened on 1 August 1956.

Don Valley remains one of five City of Toronto public golf courses and is the longest of the group at 6,163 yards.
