About Dumfries & County Golf Club

Dumfries & County Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course on Edinburgh Road in Dumfries. The club was established in May 1912 after demand for golf in the town had outgrown the existing Dumfries and Galloway club. Willie Fernie designed the original course on land from the Nunfield Estate, arranging the holes as two loops returning to the clubhouse.

James Braid proposed and implemented major changes in the late 1920s, removing agricultural hedges and ditches and introducing more purposeful bunkering. The current course is a par 69 measuring 5,925 yards according to the club, with a published rating of 69 and slope of 126. Its compact parkland routing contains numerous mature trees and several blind tee shots.

Origins

The club emerged in 1912 when the popularity of golf in Dumfries had exceeded the capacity of the town's existing club. It was formally established in May and quickly attracted 230 members. Willie Fernie laid out the course on land from the Nunfield Estate.

Design Philosophy

Fernie created two loops beginning and ending near the clubhouse. James Braid's later work removed agricultural hedges and ditches and substituted strategic bunkering, moving the course away from its origins on working estate land.

Development

Parts of the course returned to agricultural use during both world wars. Additional Nunfield and Dalscone Estate land later allowed changes and expansion, while extensive tree planting altered the course's character. Beginning in the 1990s, the greens were rebuilt to USGA specifications.

Today

The club occupies approximately 88 acres and operates an 18-hole, par-69 parkland course with visitor access.
