Origins

Durban Country Club was formed in 1920 as Durban sought a more dependable championship golf venue. Sandy coastal ground north of the city centre was selected, and George Waterman, assisted by Laurie Waters, developed the original course. It formally opened on 9 December 1922.

Did You Know?
The club was created partly because repeated flooding at Durban's existing golf venue threatened the city's ability to continue hosting major golf.

Development

The course evolved through later architectural input, including recommendations by S. V. Hotchkin and changes by Bob Grimsdell.

Flooding in 2022 caused major damage. Golf Data subsequently undertook extensive reconstruction, including rebuilding all 18 greens and introducing drainage and flood-management measures before the course reopened.

Recognition

Durban Country Club has been a significant venue in South African championship golf for more than a century and has repeatedly staged the national Open.

Today

The reconstructed course returned to national championship use when the South African Open was staged at Durban Country Club again in 2025.
