History & Design

Opened
A city-owned, 18-hole municipal course occupying part of Frasch Park, a roughly 90-acre recreation complex in Sulphur, Louisiana. Named, like the city itself, for sulfur-mining pioneer Herman Frasch.

Origins

The city of Sulphur takes its name from Herman Frasch, the German-born chemist whose Union Sulphur Company, founded in 1896, developed a method of pumping superheated water underground to melt and extract sulfur deposits buried beneath unstable, quicksand-covered ground. The process made large-scale mining possible in this part of Louisiana and gave rise to the town that grew up around the operation.

Frasch Golf Course carries his name for the same reason. It sits on one of the first tracts of land acquired when the Sulphur Parks district was formed: a roughly 90-acre parcel that became the site of both the golf course and the surrounding Frasch Park. The course opened in 1955 as an 18-hole, par-71 layout and has remained under municipal ownership and operation since.

Did You Know?
Golf is only part of what happens on the original Frasch Park tract: the same grounds also house baseball and softball fields, tennis and volleyball courts, and the Juliet Benglis Gymnasium, making the golf course one piece of a larger city recreation complex rather than a stand-alone club.

Today

Frasch Golf Course is operated by Sulphur Parks and Recreation (SPAR), the city's parks department, as a public course open to residents and visitors. SPAR sets separate in-district and out-of-district rates, runs a junior golf program offering free green fees to Ward 4/Recreation District 2 residents under 18, and offers season memberships alongside daily play. The course is served by an on-site golf shop and the Fairway Grill restaurant.
