Fremantle Public Golf Course is a nine-hole municipal golf course at 20 Montreal Street in Fremantle, Western Australia, beside Booyeembara Park. The current layout plays to par 34, with the Blue competition tees measuring 2,200 metres and the Red competition tees 1,971 metres. It includes three par threes, five par fours and one par five.
The course identifies 1975 as its establishment year. A major reconfiguration was later required when the Main Roads Western Australia High Street and Stirling Highway project took part of the golf-course reserve for road construction. The City of Fremantle appointed a design team led by Aspect Studios with specialist golf-course designer Richard Chamberlain, producing a revised nine-hole layout with new holes, greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation and paths.
The course is a 9-hole golf course. It plays to par 34, 2,200m. The course originally opened in 1975. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Practice Putting Green, Chipping Green, Pro Shop, Golf Lessons, Golf Cart Hire, Club Hire, Pull Buggy Hire, and 3 more.
The current municipal golf facility identifies 1975 as its establishment year. Fremantle Public Golf Course occupies City of Fremantle land on Montreal Street beside what is now Booyeembara Park. Although City historical material indicates golf had been played on earlier layouts in the broader area before 1975, reliable material located for this research does not identify the original architect or establish enough continuity to treat those earlier layouts as the same modern course.
The 1975 date is therefore used for the present facility.
The defining design chapter of the present course came decades after its establishment. When the High Street and Stirling Highway road project required part of the existing golf-course reserve, the City of Fremantle specified that the replacement should remain a nine-hole course with a minimum par of 34 while maximising available length, limiting tree removal and retaining practice facilities. A consultancy team led by Aspect Studios included specialist golf-course designer Richard Chamberlain.
The redesign was developed through consultation with the course operator and golf groups, with safety, irrigation and integration with neighbouring Booyeembara Park forming part of the brief.
The major modern redevelopment arose directly from Main Roads Western Australia's High Street and Stirling Highway upgrade. The altered road alignment required the City of Fremantle to remediate and reconfigure the golf course. Council documents from 2020 record that the redesign included three completely new holes as well as new greens, tees and bunkers, a replacement irrigation system, new paths and other course infrastructure.
The completed layout retained nine holes and par 34 but introduced a par-five seventh hole. The club describes this as its 2023 course upgrade. In June 2024 management transferred to Belgravia Leisure.
A further redevelopment is now changing the supporting facilities, including a new clubhouse, food-and-beverage space and a planned multi-level, 40-suite LaunchPad driving range with ball-tracking technology.
The redevelopment drew attention within the Australian golf-course design industry because a small municipal course had to be substantially reworked around a major road project without losing its nine-hole function. Golf WA and specialist golf publications covered the project, including the appointment of Richard Chamberlain and the redesigned par-34 layout.
Fremantle Public Golf Course remains a City of Fremantle community asset operated by Belgravia Leisure. It is open to the public, with online bookings offered through MiClub and separate midweek, weekend and concession pricing. The present Blue competition course measures 2,200 metres and the Red competition course 1,971 metres.
Existing practice facilities include a 10-bay range and putting and chipping areas while the larger LaunchPad development is being delivered. The course also supports PGA instruction, junior programs and community golf participation.
