Golfclub Reutlingen-Sonnenbühl

Origins

The club grew from a small group of golf enthusiasts on the Swabian Alb who formally founded Golfclub Reutlingen-Sonnenbühl in 1986. The club's own 40th-anniversary account identifies Robert Foster as one of its founding members. Foster began as vice-president, while Erich Renz, who operated the golf course, served as the first president.

Foster recalled that the early years were a process of gradual development, with the founders working step by step to raise the standard of the club and its facilities. He succeeded Renz as club president in autumn 1987. Independent golf-course references date the opening of the 18-hole course to 1987, consistent with the club's account of this formative period.

Design Philosophy

No authoritative source located in this research names the original course architect. The established layout uses gently rolling terrain on the Swabian Alb at more than 700 metres elevation. Contemporary descriptions identify an inland or parkland course bordered by deciduous woodland, meadows and other vegetation characteristic of the Alb landscape.

Development

The club has continued to alter and invest in the property rather than leaving the original 1980s facility unchanged. A master plan initiated around 2020 included replacement of the old oil heating system with a wood-pellet system and installation of photovoltaic panels on the club buildings in 2021. Course work included rebuilding tees and work on the sand bunkers, while changing rooms and sanitary facilities were renovated.

A public three-hole short course was also constructed behind the clubhouse and car park, with holes approximately 40 to 70 metres long. By the club's 40th anniversary in 2026, president Matthias Eschle said further work was planned to improve the now roughly 40-year-old main course, particularly renovation of bunkers and tees.

Recognition

The club marked its 40th anniversary in July 2026 with five days of tournaments and a commemorative event attended by representatives of local government and the Baden-Württemberg Golf Association. During the anniversary, former club and Baden-Württemberg Golf Association president Otto Leibfritz described the facility as a 'Golfperle auf der Alb'. The event also reflected the club's long connection with regional golf administration: Leibfritz became club president a few years after the 1986 founding, later chaired the state golf association and served as a vice-president of the German Golf Association.

Today

Golfclub Reutlingen-Sonnenbühl currently operates an 18-hole championship course together with a public three-hole short course and extensive practice facilities. The short course is explicitly open without membership or a handicap, while visitors to the main course are welcomed throughout the week subject to advance tee-time reservation and the club's playing requirements. The property includes a driving range, putting, pitching and chipping greens, practice bunker, golf school, pro shop and the Ristorante Gambero Rosso.

The club's recent environmental projects include photovoltaic generation, wood-pellet heating and biodiversity measures such as deadwood areas, stone piles and bird nesting boxes.
