About Gowrie Farm Golf Course

Gowrie Farm's 18-hole course is at Nottingham Road in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. It was designed by Pietermaritzburg attorney and golf-course enthusiast Guy Smith, who deliberately drew on traditional golf architecture rather than producing a heavily engineered modern layout. The official course history describes undulating terrain, bent-grass greens, low-profile tees, fairways shaped by existing landforms, push-up greens with run-offs, greenside bunkers placed close to putting surfaces and fairway bunkers positioned to influence decisions from the tee.

The result has visual and strategic references to traditional Scottish golf as well as courses such as Pinehurst and Merion, while remaining an inland South African course. Gowrie Farm combines the golf course with lodging and dining facilities. Golf-specific amenities listed by the property include a pro shop, halfway house, clubhouse bar and lounge, restaurant, men's and women's locker rooms, practice range and golf carts.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. The course was designed by Guy Smith. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Lodge, Pro shop, Halfway house, Clubhouse bar, Restaurant, Locker rooms, Practice range, Golf carts, and 1 more.

Origins

Gowrie Farm's golf course grew from Guy Smith's interest in traditional course architecture. Rather than simply imposing a modern resort layout on the property, Smith drew on features he valued in older Scottish and American courses.

Design Philosophy

Smith identified several principles as central to the design: tees close to natural ground level, fairways whose shapes follow existing landforms, push-up greens with useful run-offs, bunkers tight to greens and fairway bunkers positioned to force strategic choices. The undulating property and bent-grass greens reinforce the traditional character. The club itself cites links golf and American courses including Pinehurst and Merion as references.

Today

The course forms part of Gowrie Farm's broader hospitality operation at Nottingham Road. The golf facilities include a pro shop, halfway house, practice range, clubhouse bar and restaurant, locker rooms and carts, while accommodation is available through the associated lodge.
