The 210-acre property was the Gillan family home. With golf memberships locally in high demand and Ballymoney lacking its own course, Jim Gillan decided to convert the property into a golf course. Construction began in spring 1992.
Jim Gillan and Frank Ainsworth used the natural landscape as the basis for the par-72 layout. Lakes were among the first features constructed and were positioned to be fed by the Doughery Burn. Mature trees and existing terrain were retained to give different parts of the course parkland, woodland and heathland characteristics.
The first ten holes were completed in autumn 1994, after which attention moved to the clubhouse. The completed course opened in 1995.
Gracehill remains an 18-hole visitor-accessible course within Gracehill Estate near Stranocum, with direct visitor tee booking through the club.
