Green Haworth Golf Club is a nine-hole golf course in the Green Haworth area of Accrington, Lancashire. The club was formally established in 1914 and developed from an original six-hole layout. Its current nine-hole configuration has historical roots in a substantial rebuilding programme completed in 1958.
The course occupies elevated ground overlooking Hyndburn, the Pennines and the Ribble Valley. Although the course contains nine holes, the club identifies 14 teeing positions, providing variation when playing an extended round. Its official information names a hole Bedlam, from which views extend across the surrounding landscape.
The course is a 9-hole parkland golf course. The course originally opened in 1914. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Bar, Function Room.
The origins of Green Haworth Golf Club lie with the Riley family, influential local landowners who began playing golf on grazing moorland at Green Haworth. Their recreational activity led to the formal establishment of the club in 1914. The original membership consisted of approximately 30 people, and the first course had just six holes.
Members used a cottage on Schoolhouse Lane as changing accommodation, approximately 400 yards from the first tee.
The 1957 rebuilding programme used the existing moorland terrain rather than imposing a completely artificial landscape. Deep quarries, natural vegetation and changes in elevation became part of the course. The resulting layout contained longer holes than the earlier version and was assigned a standard scratch score of 67.
The club now identifies 14 teeing positions across its nine-hole course.
Over the following four decades the course expanded to nine holes. However, three holes were subsequently lost when the farmer at Springvale Farm reclaimed land that the club had leased. In 1957, club captain Alec Denton and the greens committee, chaired by Allan Skelton, acquired approximately 14 acres of neighbouring land to replace the lost holes.
Members undertook extensive construction work during the winter. Groundsmen Joe Morris and Alan Stuttard helped lead the effort, which involved moving large quantities of stone and soil and transplanting turf to create greens and tees. The rebuilt layout incorporated existing moorland features, including quarries, heather and wild shrubs.
The revised nine-hole course officially reopened in 1958, with club captain R. H. Whittaker presiding.
Its first competition was a four-ball event won by J. Dearden and E. M.
Whittaker.
The club's published historical account documents its centenary in 2014 and its longstanding place in the East Lancashire golfing community. Its history is notable for the extent of direct member involvement in course construction and clubhouse development.
Green Haworth Golf Club operates a nine-hole course with 14 teeing positions. It welcomes visitors subject to competition restrictions and provides clubhouse and function facilities. The club continues to maintain the course developed through successive periods of member-led construction.
