Origins

Golf was being played across Gullane Links long before the present club existed. Gullane Golf Club was instituted in June 1882 and quickly grew to the point that membership had to be limited. In 1884 the course under the club's management was extended to 18 holes, creating the foundation of today's No.1 layout.

Did You Know?
The club says the identity of the original designer of Gullane No.1 has been lost to history.

Design Philosophy

No single architect can be credited with No.1. The club describes it as a course that evolved over time across natural linksland. The routing climbs Gullane Hill and uses changes of elevation, fast-running ground, pot bunkers, exposed wind and sloping greens rather than artificial features as its principal defences.

Development

Demand for golf at Gullane led to further expansion. Willie Park Jr. laid out No.2 in 1898, and by 1910 three separate 18-hole courses existed on Gullane Hill.

Recent maintenance has included extensive bunker renovation, pathway work and programmes intended to strengthen fine fescue and bent-grass putting surfaces.

Recognition

No.1 and No.2 have together staged more than 35 national and international amateur championships as well as Open Championship Final Qualifying. No.1 has also been used for professional Scottish Open competition.

Today

Gullane Golf Club remains a three-course links operation. No.1 is its premier championship layout, while No.2 and No.3 are distinct courses with separate green fees and identities.
