About Half Moon Bay Golf Club

Half Moon Bay Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-70 course at Yorkeys Knob north of Cairns. The club was established in 1969 after about 50 people attended a public meeting on 14 September to discuss creating a golf course from coastal scrub on council recreational-reserve land. Volunteers contributed more than 7,000 hours during the first year, clearing selected trees, levelling ground, planting grass and constructing dams and an early machinery shed.

The first golf was played on 30 May 1970 as a nine-hole four-ball-best-ball event. The course subsequently developed into its present 18-hole layout, measuring about 5,129 metres. Its routing includes numerous water and out-of-bounds challenges, with the club publishing detailed playing notes for all 18 holes.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 70, 5,129m. The course originally opened in 1970. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Golf Shop, Restaurant, Bar, Golf Simulator.

Origins

Around 50 prospective members met on 14 September 1969 to consider turning 13 hectares of coastal scrub into a golf course. Local businessman and accomplished amateur golfer Ray Howarth was a leading force behind the proposal. The land was held under a lease from Mulgrave Shire Council and designated as a recreational reserve.
