Hanmer Springs Golf Club is an 18-hole golf club in Hanmer Springs, Canterbury. The club was formed in 1911 and developed as part of the social life of the small alpine township, with its membership reflecting the area's changing economy over more than a century. Early involvement came from local run-holders, followed by a strong association with medical staff from the town's former hospital.
Hanmer Springs later developed increasingly as a holiday and resort town, particularly from the 1990s onward. The golf club accepts visiting golfers and publishes separate rates for affiliated, non-affiliated, junior and reciprocal-rights players. It does not offer online tee-time booking; visitors are instructed to arrange play by telephone or email.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. The course originally opened in 1911. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Golf Shop, Clubhouse, Rental Equipment.
The club was formed in 1911 by a group of local golf enthusiasts. Its own historical account describes the club's story as closely intertwined with the changing social history of Hanmer Springs. Large local run-holders were prominent in its early decades, while medical professionals connected with the town's hospital became particularly influential from the 1940s through the 1960s.
Hanmer Springs itself evolved from a community shaped by the hospital, forestry and electricity infrastructure into an increasingly tourism-oriented town. From around 1990 the hot pools became a major driver of the resort economy, while the hospital eventually closed in the early 21st century. These changes also altered the golf club's membership base; by its centenary year in 2011, many of its 243 members lived outside the Hanmer Basin.
The club remains an 18-hole visitor-friendly operation in Hanmer Springs. Tee times are arranged directly with the club by telephone or email rather than through an online booking system, and different green-fee categories are maintained for affiliated, non-affiliated, reciprocal and junior golfers.
