About Irvine Golf Club

Irvine Golf Club is an historic 18-hole links at Bogside in North Ayrshire. The club was formally established in March 1887 and its first course opened on 11 August 1888. Amateur champion Harold Hilton surveyed the course in 1912, while James Braid inspected it in May 1925 and produced recommendations that the club accepted in full.

Origins

Thirteen men met at the Kings Arms Hotel on 18 March 1887 to establish Irvine Golf Club. Lord Eglinton subsequently permitted land between the railway, racecourse, river and Bartonholm village to be leased for golf. The committee laid out the initial course, which formally opened with a handicap competition for the President's Prize on 11 August 1888.

Development

Willie Fernie directed early alterations as additional land became available. Harold Hilton surveyed the course in July 1912. In 1925 the club engaged James Braid, who visited on 6 May and submitted recommendations that were accepted in full.

He returned in 1926 and made two further changes involving bunkers short of the eighth and sixteenth greens.

Today

The club continues to play over its Bogside links, with Scottish Golf's 2023 rating certificate listing a 6,594-yard blue course at par 71, rating 73.4 and slope 134.
