Origins

Seven local men met in Portaferry on 1 September 1902 to discuss forming a golf club. Kirkistown Castle Golf Club was formally created two days later. Major General W.

E. Montgomery had promised the use of Sandgrass Farm at Cloughey for a links course and became the club's first president.

Did You Know?
Excavation of sand and gravel for wartime airfields created depressions on the course that remained ground under repair until 1945.

Design Philosophy

James Braid visited in September 1934 and advised on a redesign that altered tees and greens and changed the position and form of bunkers. His work refined an existing natural links rather than replacing it.

Development

Braid's recommendations were implemented by the end of March 1935. During the Second World War, sand and gravel were removed from the course for construction of nearby airfields, permanently affecting portions of the terrain.

Today

Kirkistown remains an 18-hole links with three principal rated tee sets and online visitor booking.
