Langston Golf Course

Origins

The development of Langston Golf Course is closely connected to racial segregation in American golf. During the early twentieth century, African American golfers faced substantial restrictions on access to established courses. Langston was built in 1939 on the west bank of the Anacostia River, replacing an earlier nine-hole facility established specifically for Black golfers.

Its name honours John Mercer Langston, a prominent African American public official and educator. The course became an important meeting place for African American golfers in Washington and supported the development of organised clubs and competitive golf.

Design Philosophy

The course's routing incorporates rolling land beside the Anacostia River. Water and tidal marshland influence the back nine, while the overall par-72 arrangement includes four par threes, four par fives and ten par fours. The naming of individual holes commemorates important figures in African American golf, connecting the playing layout to the course's historical identity.

Development

Langston became associated with several generations of African American golfers and golf organisations. Professional golfer Lee Elder managed the facility between 1978 and 1981. Elder, who became the first African American competitor in the Masters Tournament in 1975, invested in improvements to the course and added a driving range.

The property later became part of the National Links Trust's stewardship of Washington's historic public golf facilities.

Recognition

Langston's significance extends beyond golf architecture. It has been recognised as a landmark in the struggle for equal access to the sport. Its induction into the National Black Golf Hall of Fame in 2013 acknowledged its contribution to African American golf history.

The course has also been the subject of historical interpretation and documentary coverage concerning racial integration in American golf.

Today

Langston remains a public golf facility managed through the National Links Trust initiative. Its operations include an 18-hole course, Toptracer-equipped driving range, golf instruction, junior programmes and food service. The course continues to maintain a connection between public recreation and the preservation of African American sporting history.
