The South Course at Los Serranos Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-74 public layout in Chino Hills, California. Its current Jack's Black tees measure 7,558 yards with a USGA course rating of 76.3 and slope of 138, making length a defining characteristic of the course. Los Serranos' own history records the South Course opening in 1964 after Jack Kramer had become sole owner of the club in 1961.
The routing crosses rolling terrain and incorporates bunkers and water hazards; the official course page identifies the closing par five as its longest and signature hole. The South Course has a substantial competitive history. Los Serranos says California State Amateur qualifying was staged there for more than two decades and Los Angeles Open qualifying was also held at the property.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 74, 7,558 yards, course rating 76.3 and slope rating 138. The course originally opened in 1964. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Chipping Green, Bunker Practice, Putting Green, Golf Lessons, Pro Shop, Restaurant, Bar.
Golf at Los Serranos predates the South Course by almost four decades. The original Los Serranos Country Club opened on 25 April 1925 as part of a 750-acre recreational community and resort, with its first golf course designed by John Duncan Dunn. In 1953 businessman Bill Cranston, golf professional Zell Eaton and tennis champion Jack Kramer acquired the lease and began major improvements.
Kramer became sole owner in 1961.
After taking sole control, Kramer expanded Los Serranos into a two-course property. The South Course opened in 1964 and became known principally for its exceptional length. The club's current scorecard measures Jack's Black at 7,558 yards, while the club history describes a historical 7,587-yard configuration.
Kevin Sullivan served as general manager from 1961 until 1997, but the club's history does not identify him, Kramer or Eaton as the architect of the South Course.
The South Course became an important qualifying venue. The club records 23 consecutive years of California State Amateur qualifying and a long association with Los Angeles Open qualifying. Since 1996, the property also staged sectional qualifying for the United States Amateur Public Links Championship.
Los Serranos hosted the California State Open in 1983 and Southern California Open in 1999.
Los Serranos continues as a public 36-hole facility operated by the Kramer family golf business. The South remains the longer of the two layouts and is supported by a full practice complex, instruction, golf shop and clubhouse dining.
