Machynys Peninsula Golf & Country Club, whose course is now promoted as Monk's Island, is an 18-hole modern links-style course at Llanelli on the Carmarthenshire coast. Gary Nicklaus led the Nicklaus Design team, and the course officially opened on 9 July 2005. The championship course measures 7,121 yards and plays to par 72.
Up to five teeing areas per hole were incorporated so that the same routing could serve both championship competition and everyday play. The course occupies former coastal and wetland ground within the Millennium Coastal Park rather than traditional dune links terrain, with large bunkers, water and expansive greens contributing to its modern design. Machynys quickly became a tournament venue and the club states that it has hosted 16 championships, including four R&A championships and four Ryder Cup Wales Ladies European Tour Championships of Europe.
The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 72, 7,121 yards. Designed by Gary Nicklaus, the course originally opened in 2005. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Golf centre, Pro shop, Clubhouse, Restaurant, Spa, Bar, Junior Membership, Corporate Membership, and 2 more.
Machynys was created as a purpose-built championship course within Llanelli's Millennium Coastal Park. Nicklaus Design was engaged for the project, with Gary Nicklaus leading the design work.
The design brief sought a course capable of testing elite tournament players without making the layout inaccessible to higher-handicap golfers. Up to five teeing areas per hole were used to create substantial flexibility in playing length.
Construction was completed ahead of the course's official opening on 9 July 2005, when Gary Nicklaus played an exhibition match with former Ryder Cup captain Brian Huggett.
The course rapidly became a championship venue. The club records 16 championships, including four R&A events and four Ryder Cup Wales Ladies European Tour Championships of Europe.
The course is currently promoted by Machynys as Monk's Island, a 7,121-yard championship layout within a wider golf, spa and hospitality operation.
