Maine Golf Center Freeport

Origins

The land off Old County Road in Freeport has carried a golf course since 1965, when Freeport Country Club first opened as a nine-hole, regulation-length layout along what is now the I-295 corridor. For decades it operated as a modest semi-private club, one of the small nine-hole courses scattered through southern Maine. L.

Bean to take over daily operation of the club. The company's flagship store and headquarters sit nearby in Freeport, and the property's visibility along the interstate made it a practical hub for a statewide golf organization looking to put a facility, rather than just an office, behind its mission. Renamed Maine Golf Center Freeport, the site kept its nine holes, driving range, and putting green, now run explicitly as a venue for player development rather than a private membership club.

Development

In October 2024, Maine Golf announced a capital campaign, later set at $3 million, to rebuild the property into the Alexa Re Rancourt Golf Learning Center. The name honors Alexa Re Rancourt, a two-time Maine Women's Amateur champion (2008 and 2009) and Furman University golfer who died in January 2024; her parents, Michael Rancourt and Meg Gilmartin, became major donors to the project as a way of memorializing her and drawing attention to mental health and substance use issues. The Marr-Anderson Family Foundation separately funded the driving range and the reworked short course.

Construction broke ground on July 24, 2025, and by late August the new range was open: 20 hitting bays fitted with TopTracer technology, ten of them covered, with radiant heat added to take the edge off cold-weather sessions. In its first 75 days, the range recorded 215,000 balls hit, close to half of them by junior and Youth on Course players. The original nine-hole course was reconfigured during the same push into a nine-hole, par-3 layout better suited to beginners and family play.

A second construction phase, covering a new junior-oriented clubhouse with a pro shop and indoor teaching space, was in permitting as of late 2025, handled by Zachau Construction with design support from David Matero Architecture; that piece of the project is targeted for completion in 2027.

Today

By November 2025, Maine Golf reported that the capital campaign had cleared its $3 million goal, raising $3.1 million toward the finished learning center. The course and range now serve as the operational base for Maine Golf's youth programs, including First Tee of Maine, Youth on Course, PGA Junior League, and LPGA*USGA Girls Golf, alongside public tee times and driving range access priced with discounts for seniors, students, and Youth on Course members. The facility positions itself less as a golf club than as statewide infrastructure for teaching the game.
